a christmas tradition: elderberry twirls

January 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

This recipe from Modern Christian Homestead for Elderberry Twirls looks simple, and while specifically referred to as a Christmas tradition, looks like a good fruity alternative to cookies. I need to redouble my efforts to find a place in Austin that sells elderberry jam...

virtual farmgirl

January 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

Virtual Farmgirl is the blog of a suburban working mom daydreaming of becoming a real farmgirl. This link isn't to anything about elderberries specifically, but the blog rather inspires me, as it features lots of thoughts on healthy eating and living. As a full-time working mom, sometimes it seems like it would be impossible to grow your own foods or always eat natural and organic, so sometimes it's nice to be reminded that it could be done if I really decided to.

columbia river gorge: blue and red elderberry

The bright red of the berries looks unmistakeable, though.

Oregon features at least 40 flats (a aptly named geographical feature meaning an area with little to no relief), one of which is Elderberry Flats, a popular hunting camp on the banks of the West Fork Evans Creek. I can't find any posts anywhere to explain whether or not there are actually any elderberries there, but I like the name! Here are a couple photos. Anyone have any more?
