helpful elderberry & elderflower resources

(Still under construction as of February 2008)

Here is a short list of active discussion forums good for comments and questions about how and where to grow and use elderberries. Obviously take what answers you get with a grain of salt, but it looks to me like there are quite a few knowledgeable people on these forums.

And a (small, but growing) list of the sites where I have learned so much about such a fascinating fruit.

  • Cornell University Dept. of Horticulture - much thanks to them for giving me permission to repost their growing and harvesting tips here!
  • Wisdom of Healing - a blog from a certified Community Herbalist & Wellness Educator. In her own words, Cindy Hebbard “educates students and consultation clients about foods, herbs, supplements and lifestyle practices so that they may help their own body, mind and spirit to recover from harm; to detoxify, rejuvenate, revitalize and re-energize.”
  • Prodigal Gardens - a site on Medicinal Herbs and Wild Foods. Rose Barlow’s site promotes “a tradition of healing through optimal nourishment using simple, safe herbs found in our own backyards, prepared by our own hands.”
  • Andy Hamilton’s elderflower page - good collection of information on the elderberry itself, including its meanings in ancient folklore, tips on growing and planting, and a small bit on using elderflower in recipes.
  • The Delightful Elderberry - a great 1973 article by Faith Lasher with information on when and how to harvest elderberries, and several elderberry recipes.

And a list of sites that have contributed recipes using the wondrous elder…

And a few sites with good information to help understand what some of the concepts and terms used on this site mean:
